Bodhi Tree Skincare – a quest for natural skin care products free from chemicals!

Meena Kumar and Seema Barooah have been running Bodhi Tree Skincare in Carlingford for the past 6 years. Bodhi Tree Skincare is an endeavour born out of passion for a healthy alternative to using chemicals on our largest organ, the skin. Our products, body butters, deodorants, face creams, lip balms, insect repellents and soaps are handmade in Australia with plant oils, herbs and natural colours. They are free from artificial fragrances, parabens and phthalates. We have products incorporating Ayurvedic knowledge, the ancient science of health and wellbeing.

Why did you start your business?

We started our business as our quest for Australian natural skin care products free from chemicals, which resulted in us creating our own products.

What’s the story behind your business?

A personal experience with cancer caused us to evaluate our lifestyle including the products used on our skin (the largest organ) and created a desire for a more natural and sustainable lifestyle.

What are the benefits of your products and services?

Our products are natural and do not contain preservatives, artificial fragrances or colours, parabens, phthalates and other chemicals. The products are not tested on animals. A number of our products are vegan, and we are moving to sustainable packaging to reduce our environmental footprint. The products are made in Australia.

How do you help your customers?

We help our customers by providing high quality Australian made natural products at affordable prices. We are open to customer suggestions and feedback and have created product variations based on customer requests.

What is unique about you and your business?

We are originally from India and have now been in Australia for about 20 years each. We leverage our knowledge and experience with Ayurveda and the unique Australian ingredients to create our unique products. Some examples are the almond vetiver soap, Ayurvedic and neem beer shampoo bar, a face mask with the best of a ingredients from the East and West like turmeric, sandalwood, French clay, matcha green tea etc. Other unique products are Bug Off – natural mosquito repellent roll on, massage bar, sandalwood and carrot seed face cream.

Why are you passionate about your area of work?

We are passionate about making a difference by offering products that enable a sustainable, healthy lifestyle for our customers.

How do you keep yourself and your team motivated?

The business is aligned with our personal passion for creating healthy sustainable choices and we have fun working together.

Why do you love being a local Hornsby Shire business?

The community in Hornsby region is very aware and selective about the products that they use and are very supportive.

Why are you a member of the Hornsby Chamber?

Being a member of the Hornsby Chamber affords us an opportunity to interact and network with some of the amazing members and other local businesses. It gives us a platform to learn what other businesses do and let them know about us as well. Hopefully, it would lead to a lot of learning about how to grow our business and be of help to each other.

Why do you think small businesses are so important to the local communities and Australian economy?

Small businesses contribute significantly to the Australian economy in terms of employment and innovation.

Who inspires you and why?

Jacinda Arden is inspiring with her strong and decisive leadership while displaying compassion and empathy. She brings people together and brings out the best in them.
